SpaceX Strategic Expansion Analysis: Seven Public Companies Targeted for Potential Acquisition in the Quest for a Trillion-Dollar Valuation

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the aerospace manufacturer and satellite communications giant commonly known as SpaceX, has entered a transformative phase of corporate evolution characterized by aggressive capital accumulation and a shift toward inorganic growth. Following a monumental initial public offering that successfully raised $85 billion in liquidity, the company is now navigating a rigorous mandate from its investor base to achieve a market valuation exceeding $1.5 trillion. To bridge the gap between its current private-market standing and this ambitious ten-figure target, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has begun implementing a strategy long favored by established Big Tech entities: the systematic acquisition of external firms to accelerate internal technological development and revenue diversification. This pivot from purely organic engineering to a dual-track growth model—combining internal innovation with strategic mergers—marks a significant turning point for the company’s financial trajectory and its influence across the global technology ecosystem.

The current fiscal strategy is underscored by a series of high-stakes transactions executed in the second quarter of 2025. In early June, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that Musk personally directed a minimum of $1 billion toward the acquisition of APR Energy, a firm specializing in the rapid deployment of power infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This move was followed on June 16 by SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding platform Cursor. The purchase price represented a premium of approximately 100% over Cursor’s previous private valuation, signaling SpaceX’s willingness to pay significant "sweeteners" to secure trophy assets that bolster its software and automation capabilities. As the company continues to deploy its $85 billion cash reserve, market analysts have identified seven publicly traded companies that align with SpaceX’s strategic objectives in satellite communications, terrestrial connectivity, software development, and AI security.

The Foundation of the Musk Ecosystem: Tesla and EchoStar

The most significant potential transaction involves the reintegration of Tesla Inc. (TSLA) into a broader Musk-led conglomerate. During an earnings call on July 22, Musk noted the increasing overlap between Tesla and SpaceX, particularly regarding artificial intelligence and manufacturing logistics. Financial analysts estimate the probability of a formal merger between the two entities at between 64% and 90% by the end of 2027. The rationale for a SPCX-TSLA merger rests on the consolidation of research and development costs. Currently, both firms are independently pursuing capital-intensive AI initiatives—Tesla with its autonomous Robotaxi fleet and xAI with its large language models. By placing these projects under a single corporate umbrella, SpaceX could streamline its access to computing power and engineering talent.

For Tesla shareholders, an acquisition would likely require a substantial premium, with price targets estimated between $420 and $500 per share. Such a deal would compensate for the loss of voting power, as Musk maintains a significantly higher control percentage in SpaceX (80-85%) compared to Tesla (approximately 20%). Beyond financial engineering, the technical synergies are profound: Tesla’s expertise in battery density and large-scale manufacturing could directly benefit SpaceX’s satellite production, while the Starlink network could provide the low-latency connectivity required for Tesla’s humanoid robots and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.

Simultaneously, EchoStar Corp. (ECHO) has emerged as a primary target for vertical integration within the telecommunications sector. In September 2025, EchoStar entered a deal to exchange critical satellite spectrum for SpaceX equity. This transaction, followed by a subsequent purchase two months later, has left EchoStar holding SpaceX shares currently valued at over $30 billion. Given that this equity represents nearly two-thirds of EchoStar’s total enterprise value—inclusive of its debt—the company is positioned as an exceptionally attractive candidate for an all-stock swap. A total acquisition of EchoStar would grant SpaceX control over the Dish Network, Boost Mobile, Sling TV, and HughesNet, alongside a vast portfolio of unused spectrum. The potential retirement of EchoStar founder Charlie Ergen, 73, further supports the likelihood of a sale, as evidenced by his recent $23 billion spectrum deal with AT&T.

Strategic Infrastructure and Software Management: Anterix and GitLab

To fulfill its vision of providing direct-to-cell satellite service without the need for specialized ground hardware, SpaceX requires access to terrestrial spectrum. Anterix Inc. (ATEX) currently holds the largest portfolio of licensed 900-megahertz (MHz) spectrum in the United States. These low-frequency airwaves are ideal for penetrating buildings and maintaining reliable connections to everyday mobile devices. Anterix recently engaged Morgan Stanley—a primary financier for both Tesla and SpaceX—to conduct a strategic review following unsolicited takeover interest. While regulatory hurdles exist due to Anterix’s current contracts with utility companies, the strategic value of its bandwidth makes it a Tier 2 priority for SpaceX, with analysts giving the bid a 33% chance of occurring by 2027.

In the realm of software infrastructure, GitLab Inc. (GTLB) represents a critical missing piece in the SpaceX "software factory" model. While SpaceX has secured "Grok Build" for code generation and "Cursor" as a development workspace, it lacks a comprehensive platform for managing the lifecycle of its software products. GitLab’s platform provides the "back-office" functions of software development, including error tracking, version control, and distribution management. Furthermore, GitLab is already FedRAMP compliant, a prerequisite for the high-level government and defense contracts that constitute a significant portion of SpaceX’s revenue. With a market capitalization of approximately $5.5 billion, GitLab is viewed as a highly accessible acquisition that would provide immediate operational efficiency.

Connectivity Expansion and Defensive AI: Viasat, Gogo, and SentinelOne

The final tier of potential acquisitions involves "moonshot" bets that would grant SpaceX dominance over niche but highly profitable markets. Viasat (VSAT) is a prime candidate due to its control over the "L-band" spectrum, an emergency frequency band that is highly resilient against atmospheric interference. By acquiring Viasat, SpaceX could offer a hybrid service: the high-speed "Ku" and "Ka" bands of Starlink for standard data transfer, and the L-band for critical communications during adverse weather conditions. However, this deal faces a high probability of regulatory pushback from international governments concerned about a satellite communications monopoly.

In the aviation sector, Gogo Inc. (GOGO) remains a dominant force, providing in-flight Wi-Fi to approximately two-thirds of the private jet market. Despite Starlink’s entry into the aviation space, Gogo’s established sales agreements with aircraft manufacturers and its nationwide ground-based backup network offer a turnkey solution for SpaceX to capture the business aviation segment. With Gogo’s share price experiencing a 75% decline over the past year, the company presents a value-driven opportunity for SpaceX to eliminate a competitor while acquiring a robust terrestrial infrastructure.

Finally, the necessity of securing AI data centers has brought SentinelOne Inc. (S) into focus. As SpaceX builds out its AI tools for enterprise use, the need for integrated, best-in-class cybersecurity has become paramount. Unlike industry giants like CrowdStrike, which may be too large to integrate efficiently, or smaller firms with narrow product lines, SentinelOne’s Singularity Platform offers a comprehensive, AI-driven suite for threat detection and response. Acquiring SentinelOne would allow SpaceX to offer "secured-by-design" AI infrastructure, protecting its proprietary models and its clients’ data from sophisticated cyber threats.

Chronology of SpaceX’s Recent Capital and M&A Activities

The shift toward this aggressive acquisition strategy follows a specific timeline of financial and operational milestones:

  • Early 2025: SpaceX completes a massive funding round and IPO preparations, securing $85 billion in cash reserves.
  • March 2025: Anterix Inc. hires Morgan Stanley to explore a sale, citing high interest from "aerospace and telecom disruptors."
  • June 2025: Elon Musk acquires APR Energy for $1 billion to secure power for xAI and SpaceX data centers.
  • June 16, 2025: SpaceX acquires Cursor for $60 billion, marking its largest software-only purchase to date.
  • July 22, 2025: During Tesla’s earnings call, Musk explicitly discusses the technical and corporate overlap between Tesla and SpaceX, sparking merger speculation.
  • September 2025: SpaceX and EchoStar finalize a spectrum-for-equity swap, establishing a deep financial link between the two companies.

Broader Market Impact and Regulatory Implications

The consolidation of these seven firms under the SpaceX banner would create a technological titan with unparalleled influence over both Earth-based and orbital infrastructure. However, such a move will inevitably draw intense scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The primary concern for regulators will be the concentration of spectrum ownership. If SpaceX successfully acquires EchoStar, Anterix, and Viasat, it would control a significant plurality of the commercially viable satellite and terrestrial frequencies in North America.

Furthermore, a merger with Tesla would raise questions regarding corporate governance and the fiduciary duties of the boards of directors. Analysts suggest that any such deal must be structured to ensure that minority shareholders in Tesla are not disadvantaged by Musk’s high concentration of voting power in SpaceX.

Despite these challenges, the trajectory of SpaceX suggests that the company no longer views itself as a mere launch provider. It is evolving into an integrated data, energy, and connectivity conglomerate. By utilizing its $85 billion war chest to snap up undervalued public assets, SpaceX is not only building the infrastructure for a multi-planetary future but is also positioning itself to dominate the digital and physical economies of the present. As the race to a $1.5 trillion valuation intensifies, the next "megadeal" appears not only possible but necessary for the fulfillment of the company’s long-term strategic mandate.
