X Launches Original Content Rewards Program to Replace Ad Revenue Sharing and Prioritize Creator Authenticity

In a move that signals a fundamental shift in how social media platforms value digital contributions, X has announced the sunsetting of its current Ad Revenue Sharing model in favor of a more rigorous Original Content Rewards Program. This transition marks the end of an era where raw impressions—regardless of their source or substance—served as the primary metric for creator compensation. By pivoting toward a model that rewards "originality," X is attempting to solve long-standing issues regarding content theft, automated spam, and the proliferation of low-effort aggregation accounts that have historically dominated the platform’s engagement metrics.

The decision follows a broader industry trend where platforms are moving away from broad-spectrum monetization toward specialized programs that incentivize high-quality, platform-native content. YouTube recently updated its Partner Program to expand earning opportunities, but X’s approach is notably more restrictive, placing a premium on the "value-add" a creator provides to the ecosystem. Under the new guidelines, the platform will no longer compensate creators for simply hosting viral content; instead, it will pay for the unique perspective, reporting, or creative labor behind that content.

A Two-Year Phase-Out: The Transition Timeline and Enrollment Status

X has already initiated the first phase of this transition by closing new enrollments for the existing Ad Revenue Sharing program. This immediate freeze prevents new accounts from entering a system that the platform clearly views as outdated. However, recognizing the impact on current earners, X has established a generous, albeit firm, transition window.

Creators currently enrolled in the Revenue Sharing program will continue to accrue earnings under the existing terms through September 7, 2026. Final payouts for this legacy system are scheduled to be processed through early September of that year. Starting September 8, 2026, all creators—including those previously grandfathered into monetization—must apply for the Original Content Rewards Program. This re-application process is not a formality; it requires creators to meet a significantly higher set of eligibility criteria designed to filter out accounts that rely on recycled or automated material.

The New Gold Standard: Defining Originality in the Digital Age

The core philosophy of the Original Content Rewards Program is that financial rewards should follow human creativity and expertise. X has explicitly defined "qualified content" as material that reflects a creator’s own voice, perspective, or specialized knowledge. This includes original reporting, deep-dive analysis, expert commentary, unique memes, and artistic works.

Crucially, the program does not ban the use of existing media, but it mandates "meaningful transformation." To qualify for monetization, a post must derive its primary value from the creator’s contribution rather than the source material. For example, a creator who takes a trending video and provides a technical breakdown or a comedic parody is eligible. Conversely, an account that merely downloads a video from TikTok or Instagram and re-uploads it with a generic caption like "Who did this?" will be ineligible for payouts, regardless of how many millions of views the post receives.

X has listed several specific formats that will now be excluded from monetization:

  • Copied or Reproduced Content: Word-for-word text or substantially similar posts taken from other creators.
  • Platform Re-uploads: Content downloaded from external sites (e.g., YouTube, Reddit) and posted without significant alteration.
  • Automated and AI-Generated Spam: Posts created through scripts or bots without human editorial oversight.
  • Minimal Transformation: Adding a watermark, changing the playback speed, cropping the frame, or adding a simple text overlay is no longer considered sufficient "originality."

Technical Metrics: The 500,000 Impression Threshold

Beyond the qualitative requirements of originality, X is introducing stricter quantitative barriers to entry. To be eligible for the Original Content Rewards Program, creators must maintain at least 500,000 "verified impressions" over a rolling 90-day period. Furthermore, the payout formula itself has been narrowed. Earnings are now calculated based on "Qualified Impressions," which X defines as unique impressions generated within the Home Timeline by Premium (paying) subscribers.

Additionally, the post must be "viewable," meaning at least 50% of the content must be visible on the user’s screen. This technical requirement aims to combat "impression farming," where accounts use invisible text or hidden elements to trigger the algorithm without actually engaging the user. By tying revenue to Premium users, X is also creating a closed-loop economy where the revenue paid out to creators is directly supported by the subscription fees of the platform’s most active and verified user base.

X Is Turning Creator Monetization Into an Originality Test

Addressing the "Small Creator" Paradox and Community Feedback

The announcement of the 500,000-impression threshold has sparked immediate debate within the X community. Smaller accounts, which often serve as the source of niche expertise or grassroots reporting, have expressed concern that the bar is too high. Many argue that while they produce 100% original content, the platform’s algorithm often favors high-volume aggregators, making it difficult for "quality over quantity" accounts to hit the half-million mark consistently.

In public responses to the announcement, creators have called for a "grandfather clause" that would exempt long-standing original creators from the new reach requirements. There is also a significant level of skepticism regarding enforcement. Creators have questioned how X’s automated systems will distinguish between a "stolen" meme and a "transformed" one, or how the platform will detect content originally posted on obscure corners of the internet before being "pirated" onto X.

The Crackdown on Engagement Manipulation

A significant portion of the new policy is dedicated to cleaning up the platform’s engagement culture. X is taking a hard line against "engagement bait"—the practice of explicitly asking for likes, reposts, or follows to boost distribution. Under the new rules, repeated instructions to "like and bookmark this post" can lead to disqualification from the rewards program.

Furthermore, the integration of Community Notes into the monetization logic represents a major shift in content moderation. Posts that receive "Helpful" Community Notes—indicating they are misleading, out of context, or factually incorrect—will be automatically stripped of their monetization eligibility. This creates a direct financial penalty for spreading misinformation, aligning the platform’s economic incentives with accuracy and transparency.

The program also bans the use of "engagement pods" or automated tools designed to inflate metrics. By removing the financial incentive for bot-driven engagement, X hopes to make the platform more attractive to advertisers who have grown weary of "hollow" metrics.

Strategic Implications for Brands and the Advertising Industry

For marketers and brands, X’s shift toward originality is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it promises a cleaner, more premium environment for ad placements. Advertisers have long complained about their brands appearing alongside low-quality "slop" or stolen content that carries potential copyright risks. By incentivizing original creators, X is effectively curating a higher tier of content that is safer for brand association.

On the other hand, the move may reduce the total volume of "viral" inventory available for ads. Aggregator accounts have traditionally provided massive reach at a low cost. If these accounts are demonetized and subsequently disincentivized from posting, the total number of impressions on the platform could dip. However, X appears to be betting that "quality reach" is more valuable to the modern advertiser than "raw reach."

Broader Impact on the Global Creator Economy

X’s Original Content Rewards Program is a microcosm of the "flight to quality" occurring across the entire digital landscape. As generative AI makes it easier than ever to produce infinite amounts of "good enough" content, platforms are realizing that their survival depends on being the home for content that AI cannot replicate: human expertise, boots-on-the-ground reporting, and genuine cultural wit.

This policy change also places X in more direct competition with platforms like Substack or Patreon, where the value proposition is based on the creator’s unique voice. By rewarding "commentary" and "analysis," X is attempting to solidify its position as the world’s "town square"—a place where the conversation about the news is just as valuable as the news itself.

The success of this program will ultimately depend on the accuracy of X’s detection algorithms. If the platform can successfully identify and reward true originators while effectively demonetizing the "copy-paste" industry, it could spark a renaissance of creativity on the platform. However, if the system fails to catch sophisticated content thieves or unfairly penalizes small but original voices, X risks alienating the very creators who provide the platform with its cultural relevance. As the September 2026 deadline approaches, the social media industry will be watching closely to see if "originality" can indeed be codified into a sustainable business model.
