Influencer and Profound Launch Creator-First AEO to Integrate Social Media Marketing with AI Search Visibility

The landscape of digital discovery is undergoing a fundamental transformation as consumer behavior shifts from traditional keyword-based search engines toward AI-driven answer engines. In a strategic move to address this evolution, the global creator marketing platform Influencer and the AI marketing intelligence firm Profound announced a partnership on August 26 to launch "Creator-First AEO." This new offering is specifically designed to bridge the gap between creator-led marketing campaigns and the way brands are represented in AI-generated responses from Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s Gemini.

The partnership represents a significant pivot in how brand authority is built and measured. By combining Profound’s proprietary answer engine intelligence with Influencer’s extensive creator network and activation capabilities, the two companies aim to provide a comprehensive solution for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). This process involves identifying how brands, products, and competitors are currently perceived by AI systems and using those insights to deploy targeted creator content that influences future AI-generated recommendations.

The Mechanics of Creator-First AEO: Analysis, Activation, and Measurement

The Creator-First AEO framework operates as a continuous intelligence loop designed to optimize a brand’s "share of model." The process begins with a deep technical analysis conducted by Profound’s software. This analysis examines how various AI platforms understand a brand, looking specifically at the prompts that drive brand consideration, the sources cited by the AI, and the evidence provided to justify recommendations. This data reveals "visibility gaps"—areas where a brand may be underrepresented or where competitors are gaining an advantage in AI-generated advice.

Once these gaps are identified, Influencer utilizes the data to develop and execute creator programs. Unlike traditional campaigns that focus primarily on social media engagement metrics like likes and shares, these programs are architected to provide the high-quality, unstructured data that AI models prioritize when indexing information. This includes specific messaging in YouTube video titles, detailed captions, and the subtext of conversations in podcasts or long-form posts.

The final stage of the loop is measurement. Following the publication of creator content, Profound tracks changes in how AI platforms represent the brand. This includes monitoring whether the brand is being cited more frequently, if the sentiment of AI answers has improved, and if the creator-generated content is being used as a reference point by the LLMs. This iterative approach allows marketers to treat creator content as a long-term asset for discoverability rather than a fleeting social media moment.

The Strategic Shift from Distribution to Discoverability

For over a decade, the creator economy has focused on distribution—reaching as many people as possible through the algorithms of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. However, Ben Jeffries, co-founder and CEO of Influencer, suggests that the industry is moving toward a focus on "discoverability." In this new paradigm, content is not just meant for human consumption in the moment; it is meant to serve as the foundational data that informs the AI systems of the future.

In an interview regarding the launch, Jeffries noted that Profound’s software examines which creators are already appearing in LLM results and the nature of the conversations they are leading. This intelligence can fundamentally alter creator selection. Traditionally, brands chose influencers based on audience demographics and engagement rates. Under the AEO model, a creator’s "AI authority"—their likelihood of being cited by an answer engine—becomes a critical metric. This could lead brands to partner with niche experts or long-form content creators whose detailed reviews and comparisons provide the "real-world perspectives" that AI models crave.

James Cadwallader, CEO of Profound, emphasized that creators produce the specific type of experiential content that helps AI understand brands. "Creators have an important role to play because they produce the real-world experiences, comparisons, and perspectives that help AI understand brands and products," Cadwallader stated.

Chronology of the AEO Movement in Influencer Marketing

The launch of Creator-First AEO is part of a rapidly accelerating trend within the marketing industry. The timeline of this integration shows how quickly AI visibility has become a competitive battleground:

Influencer and Profound Bring Creator Campaigns Into the Race for AI Search Visibility
  • Late 2022 – Early 2023: The public release of ChatGPT and the subsequent rise of generative AI search tools begin to disrupt traditional SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies.
  • Late 2023: Marketing analysts begin to observe that AI models frequently cite social media platforms, particularly YouTube and Reddit, as primary sources for product recommendations.
  • May 2024: The creator marketing platform Later launches its own "Creator AEO" offering, marking one of the first major commercial attempts to link influencer content with AI search visibility.
  • August 26, 2024: Influencer and Profound announce their partnership, introducing a more data-heavy, specialist-led approach to the category.

The emergence of competing offerings from major players like Later and Influencer within just a few months suggests that AEO is no longer a niche experimental tactic but a core component of modern digital strategy.

Supporting Data: Why AI Search Matters for Brands

The urgency behind AEO is driven by shifts in consumer research habits. According to various industry reports, nearly 40% of younger consumers (Gen Z) now use social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram for search instead of traditional engines like Google. Simultaneously, the adoption of AI-powered search is climbing. Gartner has predicted that traditional search engine volume could drop by 25% by 2026 as consumers migrate to AI chatbots and answer engines.

Furthermore, data from Profound indicates that AI answers are highly sensitive to the quality and frequency of mentions in "authoritative" unstructured data sources. YouTube, which is owned by Google, and LinkedIn are frequently cited by LLMs. By strategically placing creator content on these platforms with optimized metadata, brands can effectively "feed" the AI models the information they want them to surface during a consumer’s research phase.

Implications for Creator Selection and Campaign Briefs

The adoption of AEO will likely change the "briefing" process for creator campaigns. Marketing teams may now include specific instructions in their briefs that go beyond aesthetic guidelines. These may include:

  • Specific Question Targeting: Instructing creators to answer specific consumer questions that AI models currently struggle to address regarding a product.
  • Comparative Analysis: Encouraging creators to perform head-to-head comparisons with competitors, as AI models often look for comparative data to provide "best of" recommendations.
  • Technical Optimization: Ensuring that transcripts, captions, and metadata contain the keywords and phrases that AI retrieval systems are programmed to identify.

This shift may also benefit "micro-influencers" and subject matter experts. While they may have smaller total reaches, their high level of topical authority makes them more likely to be recognized by AI as a credible source of information, thereby increasing their value in an AEO-focused campaign.

Challenges in Attribution and the "Black Box" of AI

Despite the promise of Creator-First AEO, the industry faces significant hurdles in measurement and attribution. AI models are often described as "black boxes" because their internal decision-making processes are not transparent. An AI’s answer can change based on a model update, a change in its retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system, or even slight variations in how a user phrases a prompt.

Establishing a direct causal link between a specific creator campaign and a change in an AI’s recommendation remains difficult. While Profound’s software can track correlations—such as a brand appearing more frequently in citations after a campaign—proving that the campaign was the sole driver is a complex task.

Additionally, the role of sponsored content remains a gray area. Regulatory bodies like the FTC require clear disclosure of paid partnerships. It is currently unclear whether AI models distinguish between organic reviews and paid endorsements when synthesizing an answer. If AI models begin to de-prioritize content labeled as "sponsored," the efficacy of paid creator AEO could be impacted, forcing brands to rely more on organic seeding and long-term relationships.

The Future of Discoverability

The partnership between Influencer and Profound signals a broader maturation of the creator economy. No longer viewed simply as a tool for "buzz" or "awareness," creator marketing is being integrated into the technical infrastructure of digital discovery. As AI continues to change how the world accesses information, the content created by individuals—rather than just corporate websites—will likely become the most influential factor in how brands are perceived.

For marketers, the arrival of Creator-First AEO offers a new playbook for a post-search world. Success will no longer be measured just by the number of people who saw a post, but by whether that post became a permanent part of the intelligence that AI systems use to guide consumer decisions. As the industry moves forward, the ability to influence the "digital brain" of AI through human-centric creator content may become the ultimate competitive advantage.
