Apple and Google Begin Testing End-to-End Encryption for Cross-Platform RCS Messaging in iOS 26.4 Beta

Previously, E2EE was largely confined to within respective ecosystems, such as iMessage for Apple devices or within Google Messages for Android users.

The current testing phase allows iPhone users running the iOS 26.4 beta to send encrypted messages to Android users. This builds upon earlier testing that was primarily limited to iPhone-to-iPhone communications when iMessage was disabled. For this cross-platform E2EE to function, iPhone users must install the iOS 26.4 beta, while Android users need to have the latest version of the Google Messages application.

While the introduction of E2EE for RCS messages between these platforms is a monumental step, Apple’s developer release notes for the iOS 26.4 beta 2 indicate that this feature will not be included in the final public release of iOS 26.4.
