PCE Runs Hotter-Than-Expected – Time for a Hike?

Despite the relative stability in these figures, both readings continue to reside significantly above the Federal Reserve’s long-standing 2% target. In fact, core PCE has remained above this threshold for approximately five years, suggesting a persistent inflationary environment that complicates the central bank’s mandate. However, for seasoned observers of Federal Reserve policy and those following the specific metrics prioritized by former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, the headline and core numbers are secondary to a more refined measure of price pressure: the Dallas Fed’s "trimmed mean PCE."

The Divergence of Inflation Metrics

The rationale behind Warsh’s preference for the trimmed mean PCE lies in its ability to filter out statistical "noise." Standard PCE gauges can be heavily influenced by temporary shocks—such as a sudden spike in oil prices resulting from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—which can ripple through the data and be misinterpreted as broad-based, sticky inflation. The trimmed mean PCE addresses this by discarding the most extreme price movers at both the top and bottom of the spectrum each month, averaging the remaining components to reveal the underlying inflation that is actually persistent.

In today’s report, the trimmed mean PCE came in at 2.3%. When placed alongside the headline rate of 3.7% and the core rate of 3.3%, the significance of this metric becomes clear. The gauge trusted by Warsh and several high-level policy analysts is running a full percentage point below the core reading and is remarkably close to the Fed’s 2% target.

Furthermore, the stability of this metric over the last six months suggests that the "sticky" portion of inflation has largely plateaued. While headline PCE has experienced significant volatility—fluctuating between 2.9% and 4.1% over the half-year period—the 12-month trimmed mean PCE has remained in a narrow band: 2.3% in July, 2.3% in June, 2.4% in May, 2.4% in April, 2.4% in March, and 2.3% in February. This consistency indicates that once the outliers are removed, the inflationary pressures currently facing the U.S. economy are far more stable than the mainstream media’s "hotter than expected" narrative might suggest.

Monetary Policy and the September Outlook

The implications of these inflation readings for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in September remain a subject of intense debate. Historical context is essential here: the July meeting saw three regional Fed presidents vote for a rate hike, marking the first three-way hawkish split since 2016. This internal division highlights a growing concern among some policymakers that inflation remains too far from the target to justify a pause or a pivot.

However, current market sentiment, as measured by the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, suggests that today’s data has not significantly shifted the needle toward a more aggressive stance. While a rate hike remains a distinct possibility, with odds currently sitting at 40.1%, this is a negligible increase from the 39.6% probability recorded just 24 hours prior. Futures traders appear to be interpreting the PCE report as a continuation of the status quo rather than a game-changing development.

Market participants are now looking toward the upcoming Jackson Hole Symposium for further clarity. While Kevin Warsh is scheduled to deliver a keynote address this Friday, he has indicated a reluctance to provide explicit clues regarding near-term policy shifts. This leaves the market in a period of relative silence until the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is released on September 11. For a jittery Wall Street, this two-week window of uncertainty could lead to increased volatility, though the stability of the trimmed mean PCE offers a counter-narrative of economic resilience.

PCE Runs Hotter-Than-Expected – Time for a Hike?

Bitcoin and the End of the "Interhalving Dead Zone"

Parallel to the macroeconomic shifts in inflation, the digital asset market is showing signs of a significant technical awakening. After a prolonged period of stagnation, Bitcoin has recently climbed to approximately $78,200, representing a nearly 25% increase since mid-August. This move is particularly noteworthy as it appears to signal the end of what analysts call the "interhalving dead zone"—the historically sluggish period between Bitcoin’s four-year halving cycles.

Two primary catalysts are driving this resurgence. The first is political: recent reports indicate that the Trump administration has engaged with cryptocurrency executives to discuss the possibility of sizable government purchases of Bitcoin. Additionally, there is renewed pressure on Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, a legislative framework designed to provide regulatory certainty for digital assets. The second catalyst is a shift in Treasury policy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently doubled the size of long-term bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation. This injection of global liquidity caught many leveraged bears off guard, resulting in approximately $3 billion in Bitcoin short liquidations.

From a technical perspective, the most critical development is Bitcoin’s recapture of its 200-day moving average (MA). Closing above this level for the first time since late 2025 is a milestone that has historically preceded major trend reversals. Analysis of Bitcoin’s trading history shows that similar setups in 2015, 2019, and 2023 marked multi-year cycle lows rather than temporary bounces. While experts advise a cautious approach—noting that the CLARITY Act still faces significant hurdles in the Senate—the move back above the 200-day MA has prompted many institutional and retail investors to begin scaling back into the market.

The Case for Silver in an AI-Driven Economy

As gold continues its upward trajectory, reaching approximately $4,670 an ounce, veteran traders are highlighting a widening gap in the precious metals market. The gold/silver ratio—the amount of silver required to purchase one ounce of gold—has stretched to 67.5, up from the mid-50s earlier this year. This expansion suggests that silver is currently undervalued relative to gold, creating a potential opportunity for a "catch-up" trade.

Silver’s appeal is bolstered by its dual role as both a monetary asset and an industrial commodity. While gold is primarily a safe-haven investment, silver is an essential component in the electronics and infrastructure required for the artificial intelligence (AI) buildout. The conductivity of silver makes it indispensable for data centers and advanced computing hardware.

This industrial demand provides silver with a "second engine" of growth. If the AI sector continues its rapid expansion, silver demand will rise alongside it. Conversely, if the AI trade experiences a downturn, silver’s status as a precious metal and a hedge against a weakening U.S. dollar provides a floor for its valuation. Analysts suggest that the current macro environment—characterized by ballooning U.S. debt and a volatile dollar—makes a parabolic move for silver increasingly likely as it seeks to close the gap with gold.

Broader Market Implications and Nvidia’s Role

The convergence of stable (yet above-target) inflation, a crypto recovery, and a shifting precious metals landscape comes at a time when the broader technology sector is searching for its next direction. Nvidia’s upcoming earnings report is expected to serve as a bellwether for the entire AI complex. As investors look for ways to participate in the AI revolution without over-concentrating in a few high-priced stocks, silver and diversified AI infrastructure portfolios are gaining traction as viable alternatives.

In conclusion, the July PCE report reinforces the complexity of the current economic cycle. While headline numbers suggest a "hot" economy, the underlying data preferred by experts like Kevin Warsh indicates a level of stability that may allow the Federal Reserve more breathing room than the markets currently expect. As Bitcoin breaks through key technical resistance and silver positions itself for a potential breakout, the coming weeks—bookended by Jackson Hole and the September CPI report—will be instrumental in determining the market’s trajectory for the remainder of the year. The focus now shifts to whether the "quiet" period ahead will be one of consolidation or a precursor to a more pronounced shift in global financial trends.
