For decades, the role of space in terrestrial conflict was limited to support functions: reconnaissance, GPS navigation, and secure communications. However, the rapid development of counter-space capabilities by China and Russia has forced a reevaluation of U.S. doctrine. Russia’s 2021 anti-satellite (ASAT) missile test, which created thousands of pieces of hazardous debris, and China’s ongoing development of "dual-use" satellites equipped with robotic arms, have underscored the vulnerability of American orbital assets.

Secretary Meink’s confirmation of "on-orbit space-control weapons" suggests that the U.S. Space Force is no longer relying solely on ground-based inhibitors or diplomatic deterrents. "Space-control" is a broad military term that encompasses both offensive and defensive operations to ensure freedom of action in space while denying it to adversaries. The path to Secretary Meink’s announcement has been building for several years, reflecting a heightening of geopolitical tensions that mirror the Cold War space race but with higher technological stakes.

The capital markets are responding to this growth. Stoke Space, a rocket startup focused on fully reusable launch vehicles, recently raised $1 billion to expand its launch capacity. Perhaps most significant is the recent commitment from a French-UAE consortium, which pledged $1 billion toward an AI-enabled satellite constellation. This international partnership highlights the global nature of the space economy and the increasing reliance on private-sector innovation to fulfill sovereign strategic needs.

The Satellite Internet Revolution and Global Connectivity

Beyond defense and imaging, the most immediate consumer-facing vertical of the space economy is satellite-based internet. The goal is to create a global, low-latency broadband network delivered via thousands of small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This sector is no longer a theoretical concept but a functional utility with millions of active users.

SpaceX’s Starlink remains the dominant force in this niche, but competitors are rapidly gaining ground. AST SpaceMobile is working to eliminate cellular "dead zones" by providing direct-to-cell satellite connectivity, a technology that could revolutionize mobile communications for the 2.2 billion people worldwide who currently lack reliable internet access. This market is projected to reach $40 billion by 2035, serving as the backbone for rural broadband, global telecommunications, and emergency response infrastructure.

Orbital Data Centers: The Next Frontier of AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues its rapid expansion on Earth, it is encountering physical constraints, including massive requirements for land, water for cooling, and reliable power grids. These limitations have prompted a radical proposal: moving high-performance computing into orbit.

The concept of orbital data centers involves large-scale spacecraft powered by high-efficiency solar arrays, utilizing the vacuum of space for insulation and potentially innovative cooling methods. Major technology players are already positioning themselves for this shift. SpaceX has filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to launch orbital data centers, while Google and Blue Origin have expressed similar interests.

The first step in this evolution is the integration of AI directly onto satellites. Rather than sending raw data back to Earth for processing—a process that is slow and bandwidth-intensive—new constellations like the one funded by the French-UAE consortium will use onboard AI to process information in real-time. This "edge computing in space" allows for immediate alerts on everything from illegal fishing to troop movements, reducing the time from detection to action from hours to seconds.

Specialized Markets: Manufacturing and Lunar Infrastructure

The maturation of the space economy is also visible in niche markets that utilize the unique environment of microgravity. In-space manufacturing is a burgeoning field, with companies like Varda Space and Redwire exploring the production of materials that are impossible to create on Earth. These include high-quality fiber-optic cables (ZBLAN), specialized pharmaceuticals, and bio-printed human tissues. While the current Total Addressable Market (TAM) for space manufacturing is small, industry experts project it could grow to $20 billion by 2040.

Simultaneously, the "Lunar Economy" is taking shape. NASA’s Artemis program is catalyzing a commercial ecosystem around the Moon. Private companies like Intuitive Machines (LUNR) and Rocket Lab are developing the infrastructure required for a sustained human presence, including lunar landers, communication relays, and navigation systems. This infrastructure is a prerequisite for future lunar mining and scientific research, turning the Moon into a strategic hub for deep-space exploration.

Implications and Market Outlook

The transition of space stocks from speculative "penny stocks" to foundational infrastructure companies reflects a broader recognition of space as a critical economic domain. With the total space economy TAM nearing $100 billion and projections suggesting a trillion-dollar valuation within two decades, the sector is becoming a staple of institutional portfolios.

However, the "militarization" of space introduces new risks. The deployment of on-orbit weapons could lead to an arms race that threatens the long-term sustainability of the orbital environment. Debris from kinetic conflicts could trigger a "Kessler Syndrome" event, where a cascade of collisions renders certain orbits unusable for generations.

From a financial perspective, the industry is currently characterized by a "winner-take-most" dynamic, with SpaceX setting the pace for launch costs and constellation deployment. Yet, the emergence of specialized suppliers in satellite servicing, debris removal, and orbital processing suggests that a diverse ecosystem is forming. For investors and policymakers alike, the message is clear: space is no longer a distant frontier for scientific exploration, but a vital, contested, and highly profitable extension of the global economy. The acknowledgement of orbital weapons by the U.S. government is simply the latest confirmation that the stakes in space have never been higher.
