The MacRumors Show: Where Does the Apple Watch Go Next?

This week’s episode of The MacRumors Show delved into the evolving landscape of the Apple Watch, exploring the current trajectory of iterative updates and the anticipation surrounding a potentially transformative overhaul slated for the coming years. While the immediate future of the Apple Watch appears to be one of measured enhancements, whispers of a radical redesign, including a new band attachment system and advanced sensor technology, are fueling speculation about the product’s long-term evolution.

A Familiar Finish Returns: The Ceramic Case Revival

One of the most discussed potential changes for the upcoming Apple Watch generation, expected in September 2026, is the return of a casing material absent for six years: white ceramic. According to insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this premium finish, previously a sought-after option, may reappear either this year or in 2027. The resurgence of ceramic would mark a notable departure from recent material choices, potentially appealing to collectors and those who valued its distinctive aesthetic and durability.

Ceramic first debuted with the Apple Watch Series 2 in September 2016, replacing the extravagant gold "Edition" models and significantly lowering the price point of the top-tier offering to $1,249. Apple at the time touted its exceptional hardness, claiming it was four times more durable than stainless steel. A gray ceramic option was introduced with the Series 3, but the "Edition" line, including the ceramic variants, was discontinued with the Series 4 in 2018. White ceramic briefly reappeared for the Series 5 in 2019, alongside titanium, before being removed from the lineup entirely with the Series 6 in 2020. Its potential return signals a renewed interest in offering a more luxurious and resilient casing option.

Incremental Advancements: Series 12 and Ultra 4

Beyond the material change, the immediate future of the Apple Watch, specifically the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, is expected to follow a pattern of "modest upgrades." Gurman anticipates a meaningful performance boost driven by a new chip, a welcome change after the S10 chip was carried over across the Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 models. The S10 itself was a minor iteration of the S9 chip introduced in 2023, highlighting a period of less dramatic internal improvements.

While significant design changes are not anticipated for the Series 12 and Ultra 4, meaning a third year for the case design introduced with the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, users can likely expect refreshed color options and new band selections. Health and fitness tracking are also poised for incremental enhancements, a consistent focus for Apple’s wearable division. Notably, an Apple Watch SE 4 is not expected to be released this year, suggesting a potential pause or reevaluation of Apple’s more budget-friendly smartwatch offering.

The Drive for Extended Battery Life

Adding to the anticipated upgrades, reports from a known Weibo leaker indicate that Apple is prioritizing enhanced battery life for the Series 12. Currently, the Apple Watch Series 11 offers up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge, extending to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. The pursuit of longer endurance is a perennial user request, and any significant improvement in this area would be a welcome development, especially as more demanding features and always-on displays become standard. These new models are slated for release in September 2026, coinciding with the anticipated launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

A Glimpse into the Radical Future: The "Apple Watch X" Redesign

Looking further ahead, the prospect of a major Apple Watch overhaul is gaining traction, with rumors pointing towards a significant redesign in 2027 or 2028. This ambitious transformation, potentially codenamed "Apple Watch X" based on earlier reports from 2023, is centered around a completely new band attachment system. This innovative mechanism is expected to not only redefine how bands connect but also free up valuable internal space, paving the way for larger batteries and a thinner overall profile. The shift to a new attachment system would, however, render existing bands incompatible, a point of caution for consumers planning future accessory purchases.

The "Apple Watch X" concept, as initially envisioned by Gurman, included a magnetic band system, a slimmer chassis, and the integration of a microLED display. While these specific features did not materialize in the most recent generations, the underlying ambition for a substantial redesign appears to be back on the table.

Design Cadence and Technological Advancements

The projected timeline for this radical redesign aligns with Apple’s historical design cycles. The company has often followed a roughly three-year cadence for significant design overhauls, observed from the original Apple Watch through Series 3, Series 4 through Series 6, and Series 7 through Series 9. This pattern suggests that a major refresh is indeed due in the near future.

Furthermore, Apple is reportedly exploring next-generation OLED backplane technology for its 2027 smartwatch models, indicating a commitment to display advancements. Industry sources, including DigiTimes, have also suggested that at least one high-end Apple Watch model could feature a significant redesign incorporating up to eight sensors arranged in a ring on the underside of the device. This would suggest a heightened focus on advanced health monitoring capabilities.

Reimagining the Apple Watch Lineup: Beyond the Traditional Form Factor

The company’s exploration into the future of the Apple Watch extends beyond incremental hardware updates. Reports indicate that Apple’s industrial design team is undertaking a broader reevaluation of its smartwatch strategy. This includes seriously considering the growing market for screenless fitness bands and smart rings, potentially leading to Apple Watch-style devices without traditional displays. Such a move would represent a significant departure, catering to users who prioritize discreet tracking and core health metrics.

Alongside these minimalist concepts, Apple is also reportedly investigating new screen types and case sizes. While a circular display has been contemplated, it is currently viewed as an unlikely feature to reach production. The company is also reportedly considering premium variants positioned above the current Ultra and Hermès models, as well as more affordable options positioned below the SE line, suggesting a desire to segment the market more precisely and cater to a wider range of consumer needs and budgets.

A Determined Push Towards Innovation and Health

The underlying motivation for this comprehensive reevaluation appears to be a determination to "reinvent the lineup in response to growing competition." Apple is reportedly keen on making its wearables more AI-focused, integrating intelligent features that enhance user experience and provide deeper insights. This ambition is coupled with a long-term vision for a revamped Health app, aiming to consolidate and present health data in a more comprehensive and actionable manner.

Perhaps one of the most ambitious long-term goals is the continued development of non-invasive blood sugar detection technology, with a target of integrating this capability into the Apple Watch by 2030. Achieving this breakthrough would represent a monumental advancement in personal health monitoring, offering significant benefits to individuals managing diabetes and pre-diabetes.
