The Mandela Catalogue: Hollywood Bets Big on Viral Analog Horror with Spielberg and A24’s Shadow

Following the significant box-office triumph of A24’s The Backrooms, a film that successfully translated a viral internet phenomenon into a critically acclaimed cinematic experience, Hollywood’s gaze has firmly shifted towards another analog horror sensation: The Mandela Catalogue. On July 2nd, Deadline broke the news that producers Aaron B. Koontz, known for his work on Shelby Oaks, and the legendary Steven Spielberg are spearheading the development of a feature film adaptation of the immensely popular YouTube horror series, The Mandela Catalogue. This move signifies a growing confidence within the film industry in the potential of digital-native horror creators and their ability to captivate mainstream audiences.

The project is set to be directed by the original series creator, Alex Kister, with a screenplay penned by Tyler Clifton. According to Kister’s own description, the film will delve into the unsettling narrative of a group of high school graduates grappling with their sanity as the disappearance of a local student triggers a cascade of inexplicable and deeply disturbing events. This narrative structure, as Kister has indicated, aims to retain the core essence of the YouTube series while expanding it for a theatrical format. Echoing the approach taken by The Backrooms, the film is expected to weave together traditional live-action filmmaking with found-footage elements, a stylistic choice that has become a hallmark of the analog horror genre.

The involvement of United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios alongside Koontz and Spielberg underscores the substantial investment and belief in this venture. This partnership, born from the mainstream breakthrough of The Backrooms and the success of Curry Barker’s Obsession, another film that originated from YouTube, points to a strategic pivot in Hollywood’s approach to discovering and nurturing new talent and intellectual property. The industry appears to be recognizing the potent, grassroots appeal and innovative storytelling inherent in these online horror communities.

The Genesis of a Cinematic Adaptation

Producer Aaron B. Koontz elaborated on his personal journey into the world of The Mandela Catalogue during an interview with Digital Trends. His interest was initially piqued through his own project, Shelby Oaks, which involved creating an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) without fully understanding the term at the time. "Me and Chris Stuckmann, we just wanted to do Blair Witch marketing… and that led me down this rabbit hole of ARGs and immersive horror," Koontz explained. He found himself captivated by the storytelling, the deliberate restraint, and the pervasive atmosphere of dread and tone that characterized these digital narratives.

This exploration led Koontz to compile a list of compelling online horror series. Coincidentally, The Mandela Catalogue creators, Alex Kister and Tyler Clifton, had already initiated contact with Koontz, expressing their interest in finding a producer. This mutual curiosity laid the groundwork for their collaboration. "And then we developed a script for a few months. But it was already in a pretty good place," Koontz stated, acknowledging the strong foundation laid by Kister and Clifton. Following the script’s development, the project was taken to the market, where it reportedly sparked a bidding war among studios, ultimately leading to the current production deal.

What Makes The Mandela Catalogue Stand Out

When asked about the specific appeal of The Mandela Catalogue amidst a sea of online horror content, Koontz pointed to its visceral impact. "It just got under my skin. That’s the first thing. It just was unnerving. Immediately unnerving," he stated. He further illustrated this point with a personal anecdote, describing how even his girlfriend, who typically responds to films with a more measured "Oh, that’s cool," reacted with a visceral "Turn this off!" to The Mandela Catalogue, highlighting its unique ability to evoke a strong, unsettling response.

While Koontz remained guarded about specific plot details and how the film might diverge from the series, he assured fans that the core identity of The Mandela Catalogue would be preserved. "You’re gonna recognize The Mandela Catalogue of it. It’s not going to feel very different in that regard," he confirmed. However, he hinted at strategic adjustments to enhance the viewing experience for a theatrical audience. "But there are ways in which we are bringing this to play in theaters. There’s a different experience to that." He drew a parallel to the success of The Backrooms, noting that "smart decisions were made there that I think parallel some smart decisions we’ve made here," suggesting a deliberate approach to translating the digital experience to the big screen.

The YouTube Horror Boom and Hollywood’s Embrace

The timing of the The Mandela Catalogue announcement, directly following the significant box-office success of The Backrooms and Obsession, is undeniable. Both films were helmed by directors who first gained prominence on YouTube, a trajectory that has clearly influenced Hollywood’s current strategy. However, Koontz downplayed the notion that these recent successes directly dictated his involvement. "No. Not at all. I was already working on this film before any of that stuff had happened," he clarified.

Koontz’s perspective frames the rise of YouTube horror creators not as a new trend, but as an evolution of independent filmmaking. "To me, they just happened to both come from YouTube. But it’s no different than anyone taking [a] camera, going in their backyard, and shooting stuff like I did as a kid," he posited. He views these creators as simply utilizing a modern digital "backyard" where their work can be seen and appreciated by a global audience. This perspective suggests a broader cultural shift, where the democratization of filmmaking tools has empowered a new generation of storytellers to bypass traditional gatekeepers and cultivate their own fan bases.

Theatrical Ambitions and Creator Vision

Regarding the release strategy for The Mandela Catalogue, Koontz indicated a strong preference for a theatrical debut. "I think it’s a movie made for theaters," he stated. He further revealed that during the negotiation process, the vision for a theatrical release was a central point of discussion. "When we were making our deal and everybody was bidding, we outlined very clearly that this is a theatrical film." This assertion is supported by the involvement of partners like Scott Stubert and Nick Nesbitt at United Artists and Amazon, who Koontz believes "really get it." More definitive details about the release date and platform are expected to emerge in the coming months.

A primary concern for fans of online horror series is often the potential dilution of the creator’s original vision when transitioning to a larger studio system. Koontz directly addressed this anxiety, emphasizing the commitment to preserving Alex Kister’s artistic integrity. "That was so important to us. There was never a discussion of anyone else directing this," he affirmed. He stressed that from the outset, the plan was for Kister to helm the film. "When Alex and I first talked, I was like, ‘No, it has to be you.’ And the reason is [that] I’m a director myself. He has a very specific vision of this, and he needs to be the person to realize it."

Koontz drew a parallel to Steven Spielberg’s own early career, highlighting that directing at a young age is not an anomaly but a natural progression for talented individuals. "Spielberg knows that. He was directing movies in his 20s," he noted. He concluded by reassuring fans that The Mandela Catalogue remains Alex Kister’s project, and its success will be a testament to the power of original, creator-driven content, further solidifying the notion that this is not a "crazy thing" but a significant and exciting evolution in the landscape of horror filmmaking. The industry’s investment in The Mandela Catalogue signals a clear recognition of the potent, often unsettling, narratives that resonate deeply with contemporary audiences, proving that the next wave of horror icons may indeed be emerging from the digital realm.
